The Project
Tech in service of democratic
area development
Innovation plays a central role within Futurelab, both socially and technologically. These two are inextricably linked. Technology is not the focus here.
itself, but is consciously deployed in the service of the social: to make area development more accessible, understandable, and democratic. Especially in processes that normally
often dominated by technical language, closed trade-offs, and institutional frameworks, Futurelab wants to make room for a different way of collaborating. A way
in which residents and young people are not only consulted, but can also actively contribute ideas, help imagine, and help shape the future of their living environment.

Zayah's Home Builder
Digital Twin
Within Futurelab, we develop and use a digital twin for this purpose as a communication, collaboration, and visualization tool. The digital twin helps to discuss ideas, ambitions, and spatial visions not only in words but also to make them visible and tangible. This makes it a powerful instrument to visualize the vision of Holendrecht youth regarding their ideal living environment: how they want to live, gather, move, and build a future in their neighborhood. The added value therefore lies not only in the technology itself but, above all, in what it makes possible: a shared space where different perspectives converge and where abstract plans are transformed into something people can see, understand, and feel.
The intention of this initiative is to support a new development practice in which communication, participation, and design are brought closer together. The digital twin makes it possible to create a shared language between residents, young people, designers, the municipality, and other partners. Not by removing all complexity, but by making it open for discussion in a more accessible way. In this way, the digital twin contributes to a process in which not only plans are developed, but also trust, ownership, and collective imagination are built. It is therefore not only a digital representation of a place, but also a means to collectively shape a more human and widely shared vision of the future.
