On October 17, 2025, FutureLab organized a dialogue titled: Talks, Philosophy and Food. Together with a group of 8 young professionals, they reflected on the philosophical question: What is a good existence?
The goal of this event is to introduce young professionals to Future Lab and Socratic Design . It is an accessible entry point to a new way of life: the dialogue began with introductions, followed by a shared meal, and ultimately culminated in an in-depth conversation in which we philosophize together. No rush, no judgment, but a safe space to reflect on the things that truly matter.
The goal is not to find a ready-made answer, but to allow collective wisdom to emerge.
Philosophical question: What is a good existence?
The dialogue began with a case study, in which participants shared their own experiences.
Key insights that emerged:
Start with yourself
Personal development and clarity are crucial: who you authentically are determines how much you contribute to the world.
Creating clarity is essential to know when and how you can contribute.
Purpose is essential: knowing who you are, where you come from, and what contribution you want to make to the whole.
A good life begins with respect for differences . Everyone is different, and harmony lies precisely in embracing those differences.
Iterative learning and reflection
People and systems improve step by step; progress is never complete, but constantly iterative.
Reflection helps to implement small improvements in yourself and collectives.
Strengthen collectively
Individual growth attracts like-minded people; a collective arises organically when individuals develop their strength.
Collaboration requires coordination, clarity, and mutual understanding.
Education and societal systems
Current systems (school, work) often focus on external performance rather than human development.
There is a need for more room for exploration, passion, and practical experience at a young age.
Placing human needs and strengths at the center can contribute to a more effective and just system.
Practical action
Small actions can already make a big difference. It is not about large-scale deeds, but about meaningful contributions in the moment.
Involve the people who are actually affected by decisions or projects; direct feedback is essential.
Dialogue and learning from others
Listening and asking questions is more important than giving immediate answers.
Dialogue with different perspectives increases understanding and offers a more complete picture of situations.
Individually and collectively
The dialogue brought forward two levels of a good existence:
Individual – personal growth, self-development, inner peace and utilizing your talents.
Collective – contributing to a society where everyone feels seen and safe.
When these levels are in balance, living from strength and awareness, and connecting with others, a sense of community emerges.
Why is this important in Amsterdam Southeast?
This form of dialogue is of great value in a society that is becoming more complex due to quick opinions, polarization, and digital distractions. In Amsterdam Zuidoost , a neighborhood of cultures, languages, and life stories, this format helps strengthen trust, understanding, and collective responsibility .
The Socratic Design Dialogue offers a safe and accessible entry point for young people, local residents, and professionals to meet and philosophize together about what a good existence means, both individually and collectively.
As one participant summarized it:
A good existence is living with intention and direction, in balance with yourself, others, and the world.
Reflection
The dialogue shows that wisdom does not come from one person, but arises between people who truly listen . It demonstrates that change does not always begin with grand plans, but with small moments of awareness—a conversation that touches, connects, and inspires.
